It took me a while to warm up to the hero Lorenzo, who has lived life for himself and denied his ties to the Pyr (but refused the Slayers as well) but Lorenzo's initial 'jerkness' actually gave him room to grow and I ended up liking that the 'mates' didn't start out perfect for each other either though there was enough of a hook to draw them back
